PRODUCTION SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES AT OLD TOWN

At Johnson Outdoors and Old Town, helping others experience the awe of the outdoors is core to who we are. We must leave a legacy of innovation and sustainability, so that future generations benefit from our existence, enjoying time outside and on the water for years to come.

There’s always more to be done, but we are constantly seeking ways to lessen our environmental impact.  Below are some of our initiatives we’ve embraced for many years now.

Quality
Old Town has existed since 1898 by no accident. Since the beginning, our workforce is committed to producing the highest quality product possible. Any product that doesn't pass our rigorous quality inspections is recycled. Because of this rigor, we back our watercraft with a limited lifetime hull warranty, which means that our products stand the test of time, which keeps them on the water and out of landfills.

Lighting
Over the past few years, we've installed motion detection sensors on our LED lighting in our distribution facilities to limit our power consumption to when and where we need it.

Heating
We produce our canoes and kayaks using state-of-the-art roto-molding and thermoform ovens which generate lots of heat.  Our location in Old Town, Maine, means heating our facility is a reality for half of the year. We re-purpose excess heat generated in our production processes to warm our building. Rerouting this oven heat reduces natural gas consumption and cuts heating costs by 90%.

Recycling
We make our canoes and kayaks using high-density polyethylene. All trimmings, scrap pieces, and hulls that don't pass our quality inspections are recycled. We recycle 90% of the materials used in our process, including our trash.

Johnson Outdoors and Old Town take pride in manufacturing watercraft that help you connect with others and with nature. Afterall, our purpose is to inspire people to get out there to experience and value the awe of the great outdoors for generations to come.
